Next month, PJ Harvey returns with her first album album in five years. The Hope Six Demolition Project takes its name from a controversial plan by the U.S. Department Of Housing And Urban Development to revitalize public housing projects. On the album’s opening track, “The Community of Hope”, Harvey doesn’t have to travel far to experience firsthand the abject failures of the program.
“Here’s the Hope Six Demolition Project/ Switching down the Benning Road,” she sings. “The well-known ‘pathway of death’/ At least that’s what I’m told/ And here’s the one sit-down restaurant/ In Ward Seven, nice/ OK, now this is just drug town, just zombies/ But that’s just life.”
“The Community of Hope” was premiered by Shaun Keaveny on BBC Radio 6 Music today. Listen here (scroll to the 50:37 mark).
The Hope Six Demotion Project arrives April 15th. In anticipation, she’s previously shared lead single “The Wheel”, which was born out of Harvey’s time in Kosovo between 2011 and 2015. Revisit its video below.
