Spiro ‘Pole Star’ (Out 8th September)
Spiro first met on the Bristol music scene and have been together, their line-up unchanged, for over 20 years. Since their formation, it was clear these were not your average acoustic instrumentalists. They’ve been likened by The Word to “Detroit techno played by a travelling band out of a Hardy novel – or Steve Reich playing the cider-scented backroom of a village pub” and as “cinematic, breathtaking and beautiful” by Songlines magazine.
This lost gem of an album, released independently by the band in 1997, is a wonderful addition to the Spiro collection, showing how their fascinating sound began and how fresh it remains even today… read more

New Releases for September
Aurelio “Lándini” (out 15th Sept)
Lándini (“landing” in Garifuna) is a swaying, bittersweet homage to Aurelio’s beloved home and people. “I consider this album to be the sound of my Garifuna people. On the previous album [Laru Beya] we experimented and collaborated with other artists to reconnect what was lost between Africa and America. This album is purely Garifuna, and the entire spirit of the music reflects the Garifuna experience.”
Real World 25 (out 29th Sept)
How to condense a quarter century? How to represent a record label that blazed trails, opened doors and introduced a whole new world of music? It was never going to be easy, or definitive. But with Real World 25 – a celebratory 3CD set boasting big names, hidden gems and tracks chosen by listeners – we’re giving it a go.
A taster of Sañanaru, (I can’t handle her) taken from Aurelio’s forthcoming album Lándini – released 15th September.
As part of our 25th anniversary celebration and 3CD box set, we asked musicians, producers, engineers, managers, media, photographers and artists for anecdotes, first impressions, amusing stories, curious encounters, unexpected meetings, hazy memories… view more Real World tales.
Joseph Arthur’s Tale
Real World wants me to write a note or paragraph about its significance to me but the truth is, I could write a book on it. At least the start of a book, because in many ways the life I’ve lived for going on twenty years started there. I have magical (and I’m not using that word lightly) memories of it.
Michael Brook’s Tale
One thing I learned about working with Nusrat was that he was very interested in experimenting and collaborating. I’m sort of embarrassed to say I hadn’t anticipated that. Previously, Nusrat’s experience of the recording studio had been one where a performance was captured and that was it.
