Elbow have scored their first Number One album, topping the official album charts today (March 16) with ‘The Take Off And Landing Of Everything’.
The Bury quintet beat off competition from Paloma Faith, whose LP ‘A Perfect Contradiction’ reached the Number Two spot, while last week’s Number One – Pharell Williams’ ‘Girl’ – slipped down to three.
Metronomy, meanwhile, scored their first Top Ten entry with fourth album ‘Love Letters’, which entered at Number Seven.
‘The Take Off And Landing Of Everything’ is Elbow’s sixth studio album and the first time the band have reached the top of the charts. The closest the group, fronted by Guy Garvey, had reached until this point was Number Two with 2011’s ‘Build A Rocket, Boys!’.
Speaking previously about the release, Garvey stated that the album was largely concerned with getting older and the band’s members approaching their forties. “When you’re 40, you’re all ages at once, because you’re thinking of your youth, which has very definitely passed, and about how you became the person you are. You wonder about how the rest of your life plays out from here,” Garvey said.
The album was recorded at the band’s own Blueprint Studios in Manchester and at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios in Bath. As with Elbow’s two previous albums, the new record is produced by keyboardist Craig Potter. Garvey said: “We discuss getting an outside producer every now and again, but we don’t want to let go of the feeling that the five of us know what’s going on, but no-one else in the world does until we release it. I think you can feel in our records that they’re the work of old friends who still get a kick out of one another.”
In the singles chart, Tinie Tempah’s collaboration with DVBBS & Borgeous, ‘Tsunami (Jump)’, shot to the top spot, knocking Route 94 ft. Jess Glynne’s ‘My Love’ into second place. Other new entries in the Top Ten included Enrique Iglesias ft. Pitbull with ‘I’m A Freak’ at four, Flo Rida’s ‘How I Feel’ at eight and Pixie Lott with ‘Nasty’ at Number Nine.
