LOU REED

Tribute concerts honoring Lou Reed have been frequent since the rock legend’s death on October 27th – and another substantial one will take place this Sunday, November 24th at the Bowery Electric in New York .

According to Brooklyn Vegan, the event – billed “Last Great American Whale: A Concert in Memory of Lou Reed” – will feature a solid, eclectic line-up, including TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe, Patti Smith Band guitarist Lenny Kaye and no-wave pioneer Arto Lindsay. The soul-rock outfit Hollis Brown will perform the Velvet Undergound’s 1970 LP Loaded from front to back.

Other performers include the multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily (who collaborated with both Reed and Laurie Anderson), Voidoids guitarist Ivan Julian and Justin Hayward-Young of punk-rockers the Vaccines. Tickets for the event are currently on sale with all proceeds benefiting the Ali Forney Center, which “works to protect LGBT youth from the harm of homelessness in the city.” On the night of the concert, the venue will also host a pre-Thanksgiving food drive for Food Bank of NYC.

Not all of the tributes honoring Reed have been concerts. Earlier this month, an intimate three-hour ceremony called “New York: Lou Reed at Lincoln Center” avoided performances and dedications, honoring Reed’s career by blasting tracks from across his career to a group of family members, friends and fans. Meanwhile, written tributes have been pouring in from Reed’s musical peers and admirers (including legends like Mick Jagger, David Byrne and Michael Stipe).

Laurie Anderson, Reed’s wife, also penned a breathtaking essay on her husband’s artistic life (and death).
