U2 have written and recorded a new song called “Ordinary Love” for the upcoming theatrical film, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. It’s the first new U2 song since 2010, when “Soon” was released in the mega-deluxe U2 360 At The Rose Bowl DVD box set and “Mercy (live)” was released on Wide Awake In Europe.*
According to Showbiz 411, the song will premiere today in a new trailer for the movie that will be available on Yahoo on other sites. As we reported last night, this is also the likely “something special” for U2.com members later today, too.
Movie trailers typically aren’t long enough and don’t include full versions of songs, so fans may not get a chance to hear all of “Ordinary Love” until a formal release later. (Unless U2.com is letting members hear the full song.)
* We’re not counting new versions of old songs, like those heard in From The Sky Down, nor are we counting newly released remixes, etc.
UPDATE: As expected, the bonus for U2.com members today is the chance to see the new movie trailer a little before it premieres on Yahoo Movies and other sites. The trailer runs about 2:30, and U2 comes in at about 1:25. “Ordinary Love” plays for most of that final minute of the trailer. Alas, we’ll all have to wait until later to hear the full song. If you’re not a U2.com member, keep an eye on the Yahoo Movies link above — that’s where the trailer should show up later today.
UPDATE #2: Here’s the trailer as posted on Yahoo Movies:
