Kasabian played a hit-packed set as they headlined the first day of Hard Rock Calling at London’s Olympic Park last night (June 29).
Striding onstage to the theme from BBC sports programme Grandstand, they began with ‘Days Are Forgotten’ from their fourth album ‘Velociraptor!’ as around 45,000 people looked on.
There were few surprises in the set, which spanned songs from all four of their albums. Singer Tom Meighan stopped after three songs to introduce ‘Reason Is Treason’ from their 2004 debut. “Who remembers this?” he said. Chat was minimal throughout, although Meighan did break later in the set to call out Tottenham Hotspur footballer Gareth Bale for copying him. “You know that heart thing he does when he scores? I invented that, I did that first. So fuck Gareth Bale.”
There were a number of covers or snippets of other songs throughout the set, including Dick Dale’s ‘Miserlou’, from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, which provided the intro to set closer ‘LSF’, an extract of Camille Yarbrough’s ‘Take Yo’ Praise’, and a full cover of The Korgis’ ‘Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometimes’ sung by guitarist Serge Pizzorno.
After the performance, the band had their aftershow at This Feeling at the Oval Space warehouse in Bethnal Green, attended by the likes of Miles Kane, who had also performed on Hard Rock Calling’s main stage earlier in the day, Abbey Clancy and footballer Peter Crouch, and actress Anna Friel. London band Dexters and Stockport singer Findlay performed.
Speaking to NME, Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno detailed the band’s plans for their fifth album. He said: “It’s early days, but we’re hoping it’ll be released early next year. I’ve got a fair few ideas already and it’s sounding deep. Like future psychedelia, with a moshpit edge. How many bands can say they make music like that?”
He also said he wasn’t too disappointed not to be performing at Glastonbury: “Next time we go I want it to be when we’re headlining. It’s inevitable that we’ll headline, whether it’s next year or in 10 years. We’ll do it, I know it. Tonight at Hard Rock was one of the best nights of my life, I was buzzing my tits off and I thought it was amazing.”
Earlier in the day, Miles Kane and Paul Weller were among the acts on the main stage, while Klaxons and The Cribs appeared on the second stage. During The Cribs’ set, singer Ryan Jarman showed no signs of the illness that saw him hospitalised earlier this month. He also appeared to make a jibe at the transatlantic accent Alex Turner spoke with during Arctic Monkeys Glastonbury headlining set on Friday (June 28).
“Thangyouverygoddammuch” he drawled in a faux Elvis voice. He then adopted his usual broad Yorkshire voice to say “We’re The Cribs and we’re from Wakefield.”
