Nine Inch Nails guitarist Adrian Belew (pictured above) has quit the band.

Belew – best known as the frontman of King Crimson – joined the band’s line-up in February but announced on his Facebook page yesterday (June 6) that his time with Trent Reznor and co. has come to an end.

In a post that has since been deleted, he wrote: “I greatly respect trent and the music he makes. no one is at fault. we both agreed it just was not working.” He later posted the following shorter message, which remains on his Facebook page: “concerning me being part of the 2013 Nine Inch Nails band: it didn’t work.”

Belew is the second band member to leave Nine Inch Nails in less than a month. Bassist Eric Avery announced his departure on May 15, saying he had felt “overwhelmed” by “all the intensity that Nails demands”.

Nine Inch Nails have since announced that they will release a new album called ‘Hesitation Marks’ on September 3. The band has also confirmed details of a massive tour stretching from the end of July to the end of November, which mainly consists of North American dates but includes sets at Leeds Festival on August 23 and Reading Festival on August 25.

Meanwhile, Reznor has spoken about the “encouragement” he gave a troubled Josh Homme while the latter was making the new Queen Of The Stones album, ‘… Like Clockwork’. “I just saw a guy who I felt was going through a period of vulnerability – personal vulnerability and artistic vulnerability,” Reznor recalled, speaking on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show last night (June 6).

“He was at a stage in his life where things weren’t as clear-cut and the direction forward wasn’t as clear and I think that’s usually an excellent time to make great art. I think all I really did was provide some kind words and encouragement because he’s one of the people, I think, that’s making the most interesting music today.”
