R.E.M., Belle and Sebastian Members Contribute to Snow Patrol Side Project
Last year certainly had its fair share of supergroups, but 2010 is already making efforts to keep up. Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has drafted quite a team of musicians for his latest side project, Tired Pony. The album, which Lightbody has described as “country-tinged†will feature R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, Belle and Sebastian drummer Richard Coburn, Iain Archer and his wife, singer Miriam Kaufman, and producer Garret “Jacknife†Lee.
“Peter is one of my all-time heroes,†Lightbody told Q Magazine. “I admire his versatility, he can play any stringed instrument and more besides. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with! He’s a real innovator, which is great because this is a whole new project.â€
The group is currently recording in a studio in Portland, Ore., and, according to Lightbody’s blog on the Snow Patrol website, one more unannounced musical superstar is slated to appear on the record.
The genesis for the project came last May when Lightbody announced he would be taking a year off from Snow Patrol to pursue some side projects. After he finishes recording the Tired Pony album, he will be working on an electronic album, again with Lee. The duo, monikered Listen…Tanks!, makes what Lightbody calls “Russian submarine music.†Here is a sample.
Neither project’s album has a confirmed release date.
