non sarei Alien e soprattutto in Acid, se non vi segnalassi questa uscita:

Flaming Lips – Christmas On Mars

tracklist:

01. Once Beyond Hopelessness
02. The Distance Between Mars and the Earth — Part One
03. The Horrors of Isolation: The Celestial Dissolve, Triumphant Hallucination, Light Being Absorbed
04. In Excelsior Vaginalistic
05. Your Spaceship Comes From Within
06. Suicide and Extraordinary Mistakes
07. The Distance Between Mars and the Earth — Part Two
08. The Secret of Immortality: This Strange Feeling, This Impossible World
09. The Gleaming Armament of Marching Genitalia
10. The Distress Signals of Celestial Objects
11. Space Bible With Volume Lumps
12. Once Beyond Hopelessness

“Not content with captivating crowds at their zany stage shows, Oklahoma’s purveyors of psychedelic pop have turned to low budget film-making. Christmas on Mars is a distinctly untraditional festive film, set on board a spaceship, with a dark and brooding score that eschews the Flips’ usual easy-on-the ear melodicism. While several tracks, including the opener ‘Once Beyond Hopelessness’, feel overly repetitive, there are some beautifully uplifting moments reminiscent of Disney’s Fantasia. Awash with strings, drums and found sounds, this lyric-free soundtrack evokes a dystopian vision of life in outer space.”

tracklist:
01. “The Power of Myth” – 5:29
02. “How to Bill the Bilderberg Group” – 3:28
03. “Population Council’s Wet Dream” – 6:18
04. “Private Fortunes” – 4:13
05. “Trilateral Commission as Dinner Guests” – 4:52
06. “1921? – 1:36
07. “Family War Funding (Love Those Rothschilds)” – 3:55
08. “Vipers in the Bosom” – 1:50
09. “I Like Rockefellers’ First Two Albums, but After That…” – 4:32
10. “Old Money” – 9:19

Omar Rodriguez Lopez’s Old Money is the first album that The Mars Volta guitarist/producer/writer/arranger will release with Stones Throw Records. The addictive melodies and passionate execution of each performance render Old Money perhaps the most accessible of his non-Volta recordings, and the perfect entry point to anyone not yet familiar with what this prolific artist has to offer.

The album fits comfortably between the guitarist’s monumental work with The Mars Volta, and his prior rock-based solo releases such as 2007’s The Apocalypse Inside Of An Orange. Loosely based on the concept of exploitative industrialists and, well, their old money, the album presents a 10-track collection of concise rock compositions, which range from progressive to psychedelic to downright funky. Many of these sounds could easily be at home on a Volta record proper had they meshed with Cedric Bixler-Zavala’s vocals; Rodriguez Lopez has hinted that this record was a potential follow up to the 2006 Volta release Amputechture until he changed his musical direction.

Through the assistance of many of the players familiar to any fan of his “day gig”, Rodriguez Lopez goes straight for the jugular with an unrelenting trio of opening tracks: the lead-in “The Power of Myth”, the haunting, Middle Eastern-psych flavored “How to Bill the Bilderberg Group”, and the blistering “Population Council’s Wet Dream.” The results are formidable and easily rank among the most exciting moments of Rodriguez Lopez’s solo output. The remainder of the album is equally as memorable and certainly the product of acute inspiration on behalf of its creator. Though clear influences of popular ensembles such as Pink Floyd and Santana can be discerned, a deeper study reveals the cross-continental influence of Israeli garage psych heroes The Churchills, French proggers Ame Son and Magma and Turkish guitar-god Erkin Koray – amongst others.

This historical, though thoroughly modern, discourse ensures that this release fits perfectly within the ever expanding Stones Throw Records’ novel. This album serves as an interesting new chapter in the same book that houses Madlib’s interplanetary ramblings, Gary Wilson’s recurring adolescent nightmares and The Stark Reality’s fuzzy children’s stories: all Mars Volta favorites.

E questo, è per i Buscaderi in trasferta sul buzzblog:

Todd Snider “Peace Queer”

by Brad Tucker
Listening to Todd Snider’s back-catalogue gives one the impression that he has extremely varied tastes in music, and that he is greatly affected by whatever he is listening to. At different times he is contemporary pop country, straight folk, John Prine, or Tom Petty. There are moments on his 1994 debut, Songs for the Daily Planet, where Snider sounds destined for the top of country music charts. 14 years later, it is clear that he refuses to bow to any label (he’s on his fifth) and is even less willing to lock himself into one genre. With the release of Peace Queer, his eighth studio album, Snider continues to draw on political and ethical lyrical subjects, while straying further from his rock leanings than usual. To call this a quiet album is an understatement. Snider even strips down Creedence Clearwater Revival’s classic protest “Fortunate Son” into a finger picked softy that is equally affecting, even without John Fogerty’s scathing vocals. Winning the battle but losing the war is smartly measured, once in the spoken word “Is Thing Working?” and later in the album’s closer, “Is This Thing On,” a musical arrangement of the same lyrics. Snider’s past critics have pointed to his sometimes contrived lyrics, his sometimes derivative sounds, and his sometimes incomplete albums. Here Snider avoids all of these pitfalls. The eight tracks on this album are smartly written and minimally produced. Snider left out anything that could be construed as filler and lyrically he never stops growing. It is a solid release for a seasoned veteran and will be greatly received by fans. There are a few messages behind Peace Queer, but keep in mind that “Fighting for peace, that’s like screaming for quiet.”

Mark Olson & Gary Louris: Ready For The Flood

By Jeremy Lukens
October 22, 2008

Alt-country veterans and former Jayhawks leaders Mark Olson and Gary Louris know a thing or two about playing roots music, so it’s no surprise that their reunion is strong. In fact, the few flaws that can be heard — a misfretted note here, an off-key vocal there — only add to the charm of this raw recording. This album was not meant for overdubs and multiple takes. Instead, producer Chris Robinson opted to capture the former Jayhawks in their natural state. Listening to the album feels like eavesdropping on expert musicians jamming together on the front porch of a midwestern home.

The bluesy “Kick the Wood,” featuring a swelling organ and Robinson on backing vocals, and the country rocker “Chaimberlain SD” provide good toe-tapping on that front porch, as do the uptempo country strummers “Doves and Stones” and “Bloody Hands.” However, it’s the quiet, finger-picked love songs that are the backbone of this album, songs that at times seem too personal to listen in on (“As I carry you inside this burning fire, will you be there?”). Listening to it only makes you hope that they’ll play on that front porch again soon.
