Muse revealed plans to stage a UK arena tour prior to headlining Radio 1’s One Big Weekend in Norwich tonight.
The band topped the bill on the first day of the BBC event, which this year is being held in Earlham Park in Norwich. Muse headed up a bill that also included Florence + The Machine, The Vaccines and Charli XCX.
Playing their first outdoor show of the summer, Muse opened with two songs from new album ‘Drones’. The album will be released in June and frontman Matt Bellamy revealed in an interview with BBC before he took to the stage that EU law had stopped Muse from being able to carry out a plan they had for the gig involving drones that flew over the crowd.
“We were going to bring lots of flying machines here, because the album is called ‘Drones’, but we forgot about this thing called ‘the law'”, Bellamy said. “We got all these things made and couldn’t use them. There’s some countries outside the EU where there’s not much law, we’ll be able to fly them there. They were going to fly around and film us and the audience.
Bellamy then confirmed that Muse will play arena shows in Britain following the release of ‘Drones’. “When we do our indoor shows, because it’s a controlled environment, we’ll be able to do lots more then. So we’re going to come back and do an arena tour later in the year or early next year in the UK and then we’ll have lots of cool things to play with.”
Giving fans a preview of what is to come from both their new album and live show, Muse arrived on stage with both Bellamy and bass player Chris Wolstenholme dressed in black jumpsuits. The trio began their set by playing new songs ‘Reapers’ and ‘Psycho’. Video of a US military official shouting orders at the audience was played before and during the latter.
Talking to the 50,000 strong audience for the first time, Bellamy asked “How you guys doing?” before saying, “Let me tell you how I’m feeling, ‘Dead Inside’” and heralding the third new song of the evening.
The played a fourth new song, ‘Mercy’ before delving into their back catalogue for some of their greatest hits. A ticker tape explosion during ‘Mercy’ saw paper streaming from the rafters, a long piece landing in Matt Bellamy’s mouth as he sang ‘Time Is Running Out’.
Elsewhere, giant black balls bounced over the crowd during ‘Bliss’ while there was a huge firework display as the set ended with ‘Knights of Cydonia’.
Taking the opportunity to speak to fans, Matt Bellamy said it was “Good to be back in England,” and adding “You guys have been great,” while drummer Dom Howard addressed the crowd before leaving the stage and said “Thank you Norwich, it’s been way too long .”
