With Blur about to release their first album in 12 years, a Britpop revival may truly be in full swing with reports in today’s Daily Mirror suggesting that Noel and Liam Gallagher have reached a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to reform Oasis next year.
The band acrimoniously split in 2009 with Noel citing an inability to work with his brother as the key reason. There has, however, seemingly been a thawing in the pair’s relationship lately. Last month saw Liam taking to Twitter to post a photo of himself holding a backstage pass to one of Noel’s gigs, who in turn has publically encouraged his younger sibling to record a solo album.
Though a potential reunion is far from official, the Mirror has reported a ‘well-placed source’ saying: “It’s early days in terms of the details, but Noel and Liam are back on good terms and ready to give things another go. Nothing is signed but it’s what you might call a gentlemen’s agreement between them.
“Ultimately they’re family and whatever has gone on before can be sorted out – they’re very close beneath all the bluster.”
Noel, who next month will tour North America in support of his chart-topping latest album ‘Chasing Yesterday’, is well-versed in fielding questions about possibly reforming Oasis. While in the past he’s asserted that he would never take part in a reunion, a January interview with Q did find the guitarist open to the idea, but only for financial reasons.
“If I was ever going to do it, it would only be for the money,” said Gallagher. “This isn’t me putting it out there, by the way. Would I do it for charity? No way. We’re not that kind of people. For Glastonbury? I don’t think Michael Eavis has got enough money. But would we get back together one day? As long as everybody is still alive and still has their hair, it’s always a possibility. But only for the money.”
According to The Mirror, Liam’s motivations may also stem from a desire to kick start his own music career after the break-up of Beady Eye. The band disbanded in 2014 after five years and two albums, both of which received lukewarm receptions. “Noel’s solo career has been a huge success with Number One records and sold-out arena tours but Liam hasn’t been able to match that with Beady Eye,” said the source. “He is ready to try and put their differences behind them in order to get back on stage together with the band now that Beady Eye have split up.”
Noel, meanwhile, is currently preparing to release his latest single, ‘Riverman’, which is due out on May 11.
