The Leicester group’s first British gig since September opened in the now-customary fashion, with a giant digital clock counting down to their entrance, at which point Serge Pizzorno and Tom Meighan swaggered onstage to perform a subdued acoustic intro to ‘Bumblebeee’ before the rest of the band kicked in.
Pizzorno, wearing leather trousers and a white t-shirt with ‘UHT’ emblazoned across it, played second-fiddle to Meighan in the style department, with the frontman sporting a garish pink-and-black checked blazer. The band’s 19-song set drew from each of their five albums.
There was also no small amount of humour to be found in the backdrops the band played in front of, particularly on ‘Clouds’ – which was accompanied by an image of a locked door with ‘London is full of cunts’ scrawled on it – and ‘Empire’, for which a pink and black ‘Buckie’ backdrop – the local nickname for Buckfast tonic wine – drew arguably the biggest cheer of the night.
Throughout the set, the band paid tribute to the city of Glasgow itself, with Meighan harking back to their first gig here, at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in 2004. “Our first record came out 10 years ago,” he told the crowd before ‘Cutt Off’, “and if you were there at the King Tut’s gig, then you were there first, so thank you.”
After Meighan left the stage to allow Pizzorno to take lead vocals on ‘Bow’, the guitarist also expressed his gratitude, saying, “We’ve been coming to this beautiful city for 10 years and every time… like, fuck, thank you so much. It gives me shivers.”
There were further surprises in store, as ‘Thick as Thieves’ morphed into a cover of The Doors’ ‘People Are Strange’, while ‘Re-Wired’ led into Cameo’s ‘Word Up!’, which may have been intended as a nod to Glaswegian group Gun, who had a hit with the song in 1994.
The set closed with ‘LSF’, complete with ‘Praise You’ intro, with the 12,000-strong crowd chanting the vocal hook long after the band had left the stage. Kasabian’s UK tour continues on Friday night at Leeds’ First Direct Arena.
