Arcade Fire added a new dimension to their geographic covers series during their three-night residency at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, recruiting musicians from classic New York City punk bands to join them onstage. Sunday night’s gig featured the strangest (and spookiest) collaboration, with former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, dressed up as Dracula, leading the Canadian collective through a rattling version of Suicide’s 1979 SINGLE “Dream Baby Dream.” Check out the fan-shot footage above.
Byrne adds dramatic hand gestures and ventures to the breaking point of his distinctive yelp, as the band mixes minimal synths and drum machines into a gothic texture. (Unfortunately, the video cuts out just as the group explodes into a rousing climax.)
According to Consequence of Sound (via ArcadeFireTube), the show also found the band’s reliable bobbleheads “playing” (but really just dancing along to) LCD Soundsystem’s “All My FRIENDS” during the intermission, while director-collaborator Spike Jonze wore Will Butler’s bubblehead and crowdsurfed during the Reflektor highlight “Normal Person.”
The Barclays Center collaborations kicked off on Friday night, as Buster Poindexter sang lead on a version of his hit “Hot Hot Hot.” Saturday’s performance featured drummer Marky Ramone hitting the skins for two Ramones classics, “I Don’t Wanna Go Down to the Basement” and “I Wanna Be Sedated.” The Saturday show also featured a pseudo-preview of Byrne’s Sunday appearance, with the fake Reflektors band introducing themselves as Talking Heads and wiggling around to “Psycho Killer.”
The band will venture to Chicago on Tuesday for two nights of shows before closing out the jaunt with DATES in Toronto and Montreal.
