Led Zeppelin have released a new video for a previously-unheard version of their classic 1969 single ‘Whole Lotta Love’ .
The video, which can be seen below, comprises footage from several live performances of the song. The ‘new’ version, entitled ‘Rough Mix With Vocal’, features on an expanded version of ‘Led Zeppelin II’, which is being released alongside similar reissues of ‘Led Zeppelin I’ and ‘Led Zeppelin III’.
The rough mix was recorded during the album’s eight-month sessions in 1969 at various studios by producer Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin’s guitarist. Page has overseen the remastering and additional tracks for the three reissued albums, which will be released on June 2. Each album has a second disc featuring unreleased studio and live songs.
Page said of the ‘Rough Mix With Vocal’ version of ‘Whole Lotta Love’: “It’s the mix from the night we recorded it, so it doesn’t have any of the overdubs everyone will be familiar with.” Bassist John Paul Jones added: “It hadn’t developed into the juggernaut it became in later years. But it’s fresher, I think.” Singer Robert Plant said: “You can see how songs grow. There are five or six other takes which aren’t present, so the shaping of these things is very interesting. With this particular version, we hadn’t reached the point yet, but it’s very, very close.”
The new NME, available on newsstands and digitally tomorrow (May 28), features an exclusive extensive interview with Page alongside artists including Kasabian and Pixies choosing their favourite Led Zeppelin riffs.
