Foo Fighters have been gearing up for a new album and an HBO TV series, which are being made in eight different cities. Now, Foos leader Dave Grohl has opened up and shared more details about the planned project.
As previously revealed, the band have gone to studios in eight cities: Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, New York and Washington, DC. In each city, Grohl interviewed folks associated with the studio and the Foos recorded material for the album.
Speaking with Billboard, Grohl explained the music itself was inspired by each locale. This meant recruiting Gary Clark Jr. for some soulful blues in Austin, getting country man Zac Brown in Nashville, and tapping Joe Walsh of the Eagles for a roots rock moment in California. They even teamed up with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans to give the track a jazzy brass band feel.
Other folks attached to the project include producer Butch Vig, Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye, KISS’s Paul Stanley and Heart’s Nancy Wilson.
“As we were coming down from the success of the last record, I thought, ‘Now we have license to get weird,'” Grohl said. “If we wanted, we could make some crazy, bleak Radiohead record and freak everyone out. Then I thought, ‘F- that.'”
Instead, the band made a record of “big choruses” and “instrumental sections that will take you by surprise.”
All told, this is sounding more and more like Grohl’s Sound City documentary; like this latest project, Sound City found Grohl using a studio as inspiration for creating new music.
He said, “After making Sound City, I realized that the pairing of music and documentary works well because the stories give substance and depth to the song, which makes for a stronger emotional connection. So I thought, ‘I want to do this again, but instead of just walking into a studio and telling its story, I want to travel across America and tell its story.'”
The album and show will be released around the same time. A source said that they are tentatively slated for November.
