During their performance at SXSW last month, Coldplay debuted two songs from their forthcoming album Ghost Stories: the slow-burning “Another’s Arms” and the sweeping ambient track “Always In My Head”. Last night, frontman Chris Martin appeared on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 program to debut the latter’s studio version.
According to Martin, “Always In My Head” explores a theme of “togetherness through life’s challenges”, a fitting motif considering the band recruited its sound engineer to help create the synth sounds and Martin’s own daughter Apple to provide back-up vocals. Though the synth and reverb lend a slight sense of foreboding, Martin’s hushed croon is a bright, almost glowing emotional core amid the ginormous soundscape.
In addition, Martin discussed his divorce from Gwyneth Paltrow, writing the album’s lyrics, the influence of Sufism, and much more. Check out the full interview here.
Ghost Stories hits stores on May 19th via Parlophone Records. For more sounds, check out “Magic” and “Midnight”, along with the live performance of “Oceans”
