Tuareg-language film. It’s called Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, which translates to Rain the Color of Blue With a Little Red in It. It is a remake of Prince’s 1984 film Purple Rain, FACT reports.
Kirkley will direct the film and Tuareg musician Mdou Moctar will star. The film is also an homage to the iconic Jimmy Cliff film The Harder They Come. It’s scheduled to be filmed in Niger next month and will feature concert footage. They’ve already met their Kickstarter goal.
Here’s a description of the film via the Kickstarter:
Both an homage to Purple Rain and The Harder They Come, Akounak is based on the universal hero, the struggle of a musician to overcome a series of conflicts. In execution, many techniques have been adapted from the Poverty Row, Italian Neo-Realism, and the experimental films of Jean Rouch, in particular Moi, Un Noir.
Tuaregs are an ethnic group of nomadic people in the Sahara desert—Tinariwen and Bombino are two Tuareg guitar artists that have found popularity in the West.
