Nobody knew it at the time, but this 1982 Rolling Stones concert in Leeds, England was the band’s last major show for seven years and their final time playing with original keyboardist Ian Stewart. It was the culmination of the group’s insanely successful yearlong tour in support of Tattoo You, which brought them to stadiums and arenas all over the globe. Here is “Under My Thumb,” which opened almost every show of the tour.
The Rolling Stones continued to record new albums through the 1980s, but Mick Jagger’s attention increasingly turned towards his solo career. That caused huge problems between him and Keith Richards, who was very vocal about his desire to tour in support of 1986’s Dirty Work. The band did play one club show that year to honor Ian Stewart after he passed away, but Jagger wouldn’t bring the show on the road, eventually launching a solo tour with Joe Satriani on guitar. Mick and Keith patched things up in 1989 for the Steel Wheels album and tour.
The 1982 Leeds show sat in the vault for decades, but in 2012, they released it as a digital download through Google Music.
