Aerosmith were 12 songs into their set at London’s 850-seat Marquee Club on August 20th, 1990 when Steven Tyler addressed the crowd. “We have a guest tonight,” he said. “The man who set us on the path: Jimmy Page!” It wasn’t a huge shock, considering the Led Zeppelin guitarist had played two songs with them two days earlier at the Monsters of Rock festival on Donington Park, but the select few at the Marquee Club witnessed a significantly more impressive jam session.
They opened with the Yardbirds’ “I Ain’t Got You” and “Think About It” before covering Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House,” Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and wrapping it up with “Train Kept A-Rollin.'” The latter was recorded by Tiny Bradshaw in 1951 and popularized by the Yardbirds in 1965 and again by Aerosmith nine years later. When the future members of Aerosmith came together in 1970, it was the only song they all knew and it’s been a part of their repertoire ever since.
It was hard for Aerosmith to top a surprise Jimmy Page guest appearance, but they came back out and encored with “Young Lust,” “Dream On,” “Love in an Elevator” and “Walk This Way.” The band’s world tour continued through mid-October, but the Marquee show was very hard to top. It’s been widely bootlegged ever since.
