Laura Mvula is now favourite to win this year’s Mercury Prize ahead of Disclosure and David Bowie, according to the latest odds from William Hill.

The Birmingham soul singer has produced what the bookmakers are calling the “biggest price move in the history of betting on the prize” and her debut album ‘Sing To The Moon’ is now 5/2 favourite to win next Wednesday (October 30).

“We have been betting on this award for two decades and nobody can remember a price move like it,” a William Hill spokesperson said. “It looks like the market underestimated her and if she goes on to win we are going to have a shocker.”

Disclosure’s debut album ‘Settle’ is now second favourite to win with odds of 3/1, while Bowie’s acclaimed comeback LP ‘The Next Day’ is third favourite at 11/2. Betting on Foals’ ‘Holy Fire’ album is currently at 7/1 with Arctic Monkeys’ ‘AM’ a little further behind at 10/1.

Jake Bugg, whose self-titled debut is a 25/1 outside bet, recently admitted that “the Mercurys don’t mean a whole lot to me”. The winning album will be announced in a ceremony in London on Wednesday and LPs by Savages, Rudimental, Laura Marling, Jon Hopkins, James Blake and Villagers are also in the running.

Despite the long odds and Bugg’s indifference towards the award, a William Hill spokesperson told NME that his album is “attracting the clever industry money”. The spokesperson also noted that “Bowie is Bowie and I would never bet against him” and suggested Foals might be worth “a cheeky pound”.
