INTANTO LEGGETE, SE NE AVETE VOGLIA, COSA HANNO COMBINATO L’ALTRA SERA…..
Depeche Mode brought day two of Optimus Alive festival to a close last night (July 13) with a career-spanning headline set.
Their performance, which began with ‘Welcome To My World’ from their 13th and latest studio album ‘Delta Machines’, marked their first appearance in Portugal in four years. On the latest stop on their current tour, which takes its name from their most recent record, the iconic electro-pop band played some 20 songs over the course of two hours.
Wearing a sparkly black waistcoat, undone to reveal his bare chest, frontman Dave Gahan prowled the stage as the video screens behind him projected images of contortionists, dogs and fireworks. During their set, the Essex group played ‘Shake The Disease’ for the first time on this tour, giving an acoustic rendition with keyboardist and guitarist Martin Gore invited to take on vocal duties.
The main part of Depeche Mode’s set ended with ‘Enjoy The Silence’ and ‘Personal Jesus’ – the latter slowed down and given a bluesy makeover for its first half – before the band later returned to the stage to perform a five-song encore beginning with an acoustic rendition of ‘Home’. They also played ’80s hit ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’, which gained the biggest cheer of the night from the crowd. Departing from the stage for the final time, the band closed on ‘Never Let Me Down Again’ from the album ‘Music For The Masses’.
Meanwhile, Editors provided main support for Depeche Mode earlier in the evening and drew an enormous crowd. Performing in front of a backdrop that featured the artwork for their latest album ‘The Weight Of Your Love’, the Birmingham band barely interacted with the audience save for singer Tom Smith thanking them in Portuguese between songs. With the likes of ‘Munich’, ‘A Ton Of Love’ and ‘Formaldehyde’ already passed, Editors brought their set to an end with ‘Papillon’, during which Smith asked the crowd “Lisboa, are you there?”
Jurassic 5 also played on the main stage, following Portugese act Oquestrada’s set that kicked the day off. The legendary hip hop group performed the likes of ‘Concrete Schoolyard’ and ‘High Fidelity’ in their 45 minute set. Elsewhere, Australian producer Flume aired tracks from his self-titled debut album on the Palco Optimus Clubbing Stage while 2manyDJs brought their visual-heavy set to the main stage after Depeche Mode had finished.
Optimus Alive continues today with a headline performance from Kings Of Leon, along with appearances from Phoenix, Tame Impala, Alt-J and Jake Bugg.
