Kings Of Leon played a career-spanning set at London’s O2 Arena last night [June 12], including two tracks from forthcoming sixth album ‘Mechanical Bull’.
The four-piece, whose last release was 2010’s ‘Come Around Sundown’, showcased both ‘Supersoaker’ – which was recently debuted at the Governors Ball – and ‘It Don’t Matter’, a more riff-heavy number which they also recently played live for the first time.
After opening with ‘Radioactive’, the Nashville siblings powered through a 90-minute set featuring tracks from their five albums to date. Though they engaged in little onstage chat, the group – backed by a stage set-up including various changing screens – played a host of fan favourites and some rarer, less-played numbers.
Following a run of older tracks including ‘Molly’s Chambers’, ‘Four Kicks’ and ‘Milk’, singer Caleb Followill told the crowd that they would be playing rarely-outed track ‘Cold Desert’. “We’re gonna play a song we haven’t played in a long time,” explained the vocalist. “I’m shakin’ in my boots. If you happen to know it, please sing along.” The band then continued with ‘The Bucket’, ‘Pyro’ and ‘Knocked Up’, before ending the main portion of the set with ‘Sex On Fire’.
Re-emerging for the encore, the Followills played ‘Closer’ from their fourth album ‘Only By The Night’, before finishing up with ‘Use Somebody’ and an extended version of ‘Black Thumbnail’.
Kings of Leon recently opened up about ‘Mechanical Bull’, explaining that the record would be released on September 24 and that the album title was inspired by John Travolta. Drummer Nathan Followill also revealed the more back-to-basics nature of the release, explaining that the band’s sixth offering would hark back more to their earlier albums. “[The fans] like the energetic direction they’re going in,” he explained of people’s reaction to ‘It Don’t Matter’ and ‘Supersoaker’, “which is like our earlier stuff. Going into this record we knew we wanted to have fun and make songs that are fun to play on stage. We challenged ourselves quite a bit. I think it was very hard for Jared to have to dumb down his bass playing on some of these songs, but it fits the songs… there are some songs where I don’t even hit a cymbal.”
Kings of Leon will continue their UK tour with a second date at the O2 tonight, before going on to Manchester and finishing up at Birmingham’s LG Arena on July 9 and 10.
