The most recognizable elements of a School of Seven Bells song are present in “Secret Days,” the first single from their new EP, Put Your Sad Down. There’s Alejandra Deheza’s breathy, closely harmonized vocals, a heaving low end, and blinding production sheen courtesy of Ben Curtis. But unlike the airtight and aerodynamic Ghostory, “Secret Days” sounds loose and playful, riding a throwback drum pattern that swings like Soul II Soul or, more pointedly, the electronic fusions the Cure outsourced on their cult favorite Mixed Up. It’s not like SVIIB to let their guard down in this manner, and Deheza knows it, as she sings, “wWnted the world to see me without the rules and games” like a mission statement.
