AGGIORNAMENTO DOPO LA PREMIERE. IL GIUDIZIO DI JOHN SQUIRE , CHITARRISTA DEGLI STONE ROSES:
John Squire described Jimmy Page as “the world’s greatest living guitar player” at the premiere of Led Zeppelin’s concert film Celebration Day last night (October 12).
The Stone Roses guitarist was at the sold-out screening at Hammersmith Apollo London to see the movie, which is a film of the band’s 2007 reunion performance at the O2 arena. Speaking exclusively to NME, Squire, who was in attendance at the 2007 gig itself too, said: “It was nice to see the film to have it confirmed that it was incredible gig. In my mind, it was up there with The Clash in 1977, which was my first ever gig.”
Asked if he looked up to Jimmy Page as a teenager, Squire said: “No, it was later on, in the ’80s. I believed all that punk rock bullshit that you shouldn’t listen to rock dinosaurs. But I know now that all the punk rockers I was listening to were listening to the dinosaurs too.”
NME also asked Squire for details of the new Stone Roses album. “What album?” he said. “We are working on songs, but there’s no album yet.”
Earlier, on the red carpet, Jimmy Page said that he had seen The Stone Roses play over the summer and rates John Squire as “an intuitive guitarist who plays in the moment.” Squire responded: “I like it when any musician complements me on what I’m doing, but from Jimmy Page that’s high praise indeed.”
Guests at the premiere included Sir Paul McCartney, Damien Hirst, Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno, swimmer Mark Foster, Foals singer Yannis Phillipakis and Primal Scream members Bobby Gillespie, Little Barrie and Simone Butler. The three surviving members of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, introduced the film – and partied late into the night at the aftershow event. Jason Bonham – son of late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham and drummer at the O2 gig – was not present.
Celebration Day will screen in cinemas from October 17. The film will then get a general DVD release on November 19. A deluxe edition will also include footage of the Shepperton rehearsals, as well as BBC news footage. See a new trailer for the film by clicking below.
