A set of long lost photos of The Beatles have resurfaced, almost 50 years after they were originally taken.
The images were shot at one of the band’s early gigs in Croydon on 25 April 1963 – barely a month before the release of their debut LP ‘Please Please Me’ – and are part of a previously unpublished collection of pictures of the band before they hit the big time.
Showing the fab four during and after the gig, they were shot by Andy Wright, then a 15-year-old schoolboy who wanted to be a photographer. He only recently remembered he had taken the shots after finding them in his attic.
“I only had 12 pictures on my roll of film,” Wright told The Croydon Guardian. “The picture of all four of them backstage, potentially the most financially lucrative, was taken with the last shot I had.” He added:I went home on the bus, developed the pictures and proudly took them into the school the next day. I still have the Rollei camera I took those pictures with. The band played two gigs that night – one at 5.30pm and another at 8pm as part of the Mersey Beat Showcase mini-tour, which featured acts from their manager Brian Epstein’s camp.
