It’s no secret that Pearl Jam are the good guys, but Rock the Earth — a not-for-profit environmental advocacy organization that you’ve probably seen at festivals or big rock concerts — just put a punctuation mark on it. They awarded Pearl Jam the title of 2011 Planet Defender in the artist category, in honor of their ceaseless environmental activism throughout their illustrious 20-year career.
“Pearl Jam ultimately hopes to become 0% net emissions for all tours and band businesses,” reads the awards statement at Rock the Earth’s website. The statement points out the obvious: that band members Eddie Vedder and Stone Gossard have, individually, been active in their activism, so to speak. And as a band, as a unit, Pearl Jam have also answered the call to action: “In 2010, the band announced they would mitigate carbon emissions from their 2009 Backspacer Tour by donating $210,000 towards planting trees in the area of Puget Sound, Washington,” reads the awards statement. “Rock the Earth applauds Pearl Jam for setting a stellar example of how to ‘rock the earth’ in a conscientious manner.”
The statement also says that Pearl Jam joins the previous winner in the artist category, Bonnie Raitt, “as those we honor as individuals who embody Rock the Earth’s mission to defend the planet one beat at a time.” Rock on.
