Ezra Koenig – “Papa Hobo” (Paul Simon Cover)
Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig paid homage to his musical forebear Paul Simon by covering the 1972 solo song “Papa Hobo” for the soundtrack to upcoming Uma Thurman-starring film Ceremony. You can stream his back-porch, acoustic guitar and mandolin-backed take above (grab the MP3 over at Pitchfork).
In other Vampy Weeks/Simon news, Simon recently dismissed chatter over the similarities between his 1986 album Graceland and VW’s sound in an interview with Vanity Fair: “In a way, we were on the same pursuit, but I don’t think [they]’re lifting from me, and anyway, [they]’re welcome to it, because everybody’s lifting all the time. That’s the way music grows and is shaped.”

Just when I was starting to worry about when Willy Mason’s follow-up to his 2007 sophomore effort, If the Ocean Gets Rough, might arrive, good news from the young folkie once championed by the likes of Conor Oberst, Radiohead, Death Cab, and others has been posted to his site: “Getting ready to go into the studio with Dan Carey and make a new record,” Mason wrote. (That bit about working with Carey caught my eye, as the London producer’s résumé features mostly non-acoustic-based acts, such as the Kills, La Roux, Franz Ferdinand, and Hot Chip.)
If you haven’t heard the two new tracks he previewed last summer, they’re quite promising and can be heard here. Also, Mason turned in a few excellent duets with Isobel Campbell recently, including this take on Townes Van Zandt. And finally, while we wait for LP3, Mason uploaded a demo of new song “Shadows in the Dark,” as well as a few cuts off last year’s So Long Baby Shoes EP, now streaming below:

Beastie Boys “Make Some Noise” with New Single
“My rhymes age like wine as I get older,” raps Mike D, 45, on the brand new Beastie Boys track he posted to the iconic hip-hop trio’s official site this afternoon. “I’m getting bolder, competition is waning.” As said rhymes and the single’s title, “Make Some Noise,” boast, MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D are aiming to reclaim the spotlight in the uber-competitive genre; a goal this tight, analog-crunchy cut proves is well within their means. The full LP, Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2, is due out May 3 — complete with guest performances by Nas (his collaboration can be heard here) and Santigold. In the meantime, get ready and “Make Some Noise” here or below:
