Rock and roll legend Chuck Berry appeared to be ill during a show at the Congress Theater in Chicago Saturday night and was checked over by an ambulance crew.
After about an hour-long show, during which he seemed to have trouble with keeping his guitar in tune and sometimes sat down to play at a keyboard, the 84-year-old Berry went off stage where he was checked over by Chicago Fire Department ambulance personnel.
After being checked over Berry returned to the stage and thanked the crowd that had remained, but then left the stage — using his signature “duck walk” — without playing again.
A Chicago fire ambulance was called to the theater at 2135 N. Milwaukee Avenue because “he wasn’t feeling well,” but after being checked over Berry signed a release saying he was OK and he was not taken to a hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Chief Joe Roccasalva.
Berry later left the scene in a limo.
A guitarist, singer and songwriter, Berry is considered one of the pioneers of rock and roll music, famous for songs such as “Maybellene” (1955), “Roll Over Beethoven” (1956), “Rock and Roll Music” (1957) and “Johnny B. Goode” (1958).
A full account of the show will be posted Sunday at chicagotribune.com.
