Despite playing Nine Inch Nails’ farewell tour in 2009, Trent Reznor says he might bring the band back to the live arena in the future.
The frontman and producer had always maintained there would be more NIN music, but he’d had enough of playing live. But with some distance between him and how he previously felt, he’s ready to reconsider his position.
Reznor tells the New York Times: “Will I tour again? Certainly. Will Nine Inch Nails play shows again? I’m not saying it’s out of the question. But there’s no tour planned.â€
In a light-hearted aside he refers to the tradition of farewells never quite being what they were meant to be in rock music, saying: “Gene Simmons called me up and told me, ‘Just say it’s your last tour – that always keeps the fans coming’.â€
In the meantime, he’s signed up to work on his second movie soundtrack: he’ll be behind the music for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, due out at the end of the year, after having enjoyed his experience on The Social Network.
But his main band at the moment is How to Destroy Angels, with wife Mariqueen Maandig and Atticus Ross, and they’re set to launch their first album later in 2011.
Reznor warns fans they shouldn’t expect anything like the band’s first EP release: “That was just the results of a couple of months of experimentation. I’m proud of it, but it felt like the first thing we’d done.â€
He also underlines the work he did with Zack de la Rocha and James Maynard Keenan will never see the light of day. Keenan took the best of what they’d done and used it in A Perfect Circle, while he describes the music he and de la Rocha made as: “somewhere in the middle of ‘I can’t do this, it sounds too much like Rage’ and ‘I can’t do that, it doesn’t sound like what they expect’.â€
