Rock is dead
December 2, 2010 by Taylor Lunsford
“Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll!†The words of the legendary Chuck Berry encompassed how people were feeling at the time and how many people still feel today. Rock music has been a powerful part of many people’s lives and can accompany any emotions a person may be feeling; however, the music industry is currently decimating rock and roll to the point where it is almost nonexistent in today’s world.
What has happened to the rock ‘n’ roll of previous eras? With pop and hip-hop becoming the prominent source of music today, it has become almost impossible for fans of rock ’n’ roll to hear the music they love. In place of AC/DC, Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, Daughtry and Nickelback have taken over the radio airwaves. When Chris Daughtry is the face of rock and roll, it is obvious that there is a problem. Somewhere, Jimi Hendrix is rolling over in his grave.
I would like to blame MTV for this problem, but they cannot be given all of the blame. MTV surely started the problem by focusing most of the videos on attractive potential stars instead of talented musicians; however, the blame is not all on them. When MTV starts showing music videos again, then blame can be put on them.
Instead, the blame should fall on the radio stations and other media that play these awful songs. There is no heart or meaning in any of these pop or hip-hop songs, but they continue to get played consistently every day. Will Smith’s daughter has a huge hit right now just by screaming, “I whip my hair back and forth†for four minutes. Since when does that count as music? This seems to happen all the time with these genres of music, but nobody seems to care because of a catchy beat that goes along with the meaningless lyrics.
I am not bashing the entire genres, because there are some good songs and albums in the hip-hop and pop categories. Eminem’s “Recovery†is unquestionably the best album of the year, and it will surely win numerous awards at this year’s Grammys. What makes that album so great is that it has meaning, and it is one of the most truthful, down-to-earth albums in years. Eminem knows how to reach his fans, and he does not have to use the horrific auto-tune to make himself sound better.
Auto-tune is one of the biggest problems with music today, and its usage has become much too common. Many people think auto-tune is only used by hip-hop artists, but this is not true.
Many country artists including Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts have admitted to using the auto-tune feature, and they are losing the respect of some of their fellow country artists because of it.
With the rapid decline of rock and roll, country is one of the easiest transitions for rock fans, but it is difficult to respect some of these artists who use the auto-tune feature consistently. Auto-tune is nothing more than a gimmick, and on most occasions, it is not helpful.
Somehow, the few true rock ’n’ roll artists still around need to find a way to bring their music back to the mainstream. I am tired of having to listen to indie bands to find good rock music, and it would be nice to once again be able to turn on a radio station that features current popular music and hear some great rock music.
