The Strokes played their first New York show in four years at the Metropolitan Opera last night (September 13), marking the 25th anniversary of Tommy Hilfiger’s fashion label.

The band performed on the terrace level of the opera in front of a giant T and H, while the crowd watched from every available angle, including the opera steps, where a dance party kicked off the moment the band took to the stage.

Opening with ‘New York City Cops’, The Strokes performed a sort of greatest hits set including ‘Hard To Explain’, ‘Last Nite’ and ‘Someday’.

Wearing a white baseball cap, Julian Casablancas asked the invite-only crowd: “What is up? It’s been my dream since I was a little boy to play the Metropolitan Opera. You only live once!” before the band launched into ‘You Only Live Once’ itself.

The show, part of the New York Fashion Week, was attended by the likes of Jennifer Lopez and music-fashion mogul Russell Simmons who were front row at the Hilfiger runway show earlier that day, while the likes of Kelly Osbourne and members of the cast of Gossip Girl were also present.

Wrapping up with ‘Juicebox’, Casablancas casually told the crowd: “Thanks. We had fun.”

Though they did not play any new songs, The Strokes expect to release a new album in March next year.
