EYESTONE BRAIN: Esce “L’Ombra Della Piramideâ€

“Colouring of Pigeons”, the first track to be released from an opera created by the Knife in collaboration with Mt. Sims, Planningtorock, and the Danish performance art group Hotel Pro Forma, is a towering, ominous epic that spans several epochs over the course of its 11 minutes. It’s engaging from the start, progressing from a primal rhythm to a Meredith Monk-like vocal refrain before introducing the duo’s signature melodic percussion and Karin Dreijer-Andersson’s unmistakable voice. From there, the piece builds from mournful romantic ballad to full-on opera as each new vocalist carries the momentum of the previous, in some sense similar to the effect of a hip-hop posse track.
The piece demands close reading and obsessive attention, but until the full work is revealed, it seems hasty to extrapolate too much from lyrics that are both tantalizingly specific and frustratingly vague out of context. The one thing that is clear, however, is that the Knife’s aesthetic is ideally suited to an opera based upon the work of Charles Darwin. This music evokes equal measures of terror and fascination, which is precisely the right tone when meditating on the life of a man who attempted to unlock the secrets of creation.
“Colouring of Pigeons” is a fiercely original and outrageously ambitious song, but is nonetheless only a detail of a much grander work to come in February. These days we are inundated with free mp3s heralding new full-length releases, and even in the best cases, the reaction is usually along the lines of “Oh, neat, I’ll have to check that out.” This track, however, inspires feverish speculation and sky-high expectations: What must the rest of Tomorrow, In a Year be like, and is there a possibility that “Colouring of Pigeons” is not even the best song on it?

MP3:> Phoenix: “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands” (Bob Dylan cover)
Phoenix’s songs tend to be bright, precise, and meticulously planned-out. “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands”, the sprawling 11-minute ramble that closes Bob Dylan’s 1966 masterpiece Blonde on Blonde, is anything but.
It’s something of a surprise to learn that Phoenix have taken on “Sad-Eyed Lady”, but that’s exactly what they did in a recent acoustic set for the German magazine Musikexpress (via the Tripwire). Click above to stream or download Phoenix’s considerably more concise version of the song.
