Una rinascita musicale

Arriva “Draw the Line†l’album della trasformazione di David Gray.
Un esito positivo che non sorprende, vista la collezione che il cantante-pianista ha accumulato nel tempo con 12 milioni di album venduti, “White Ladder†l’album più venduto di tutti i tempi in Irlanda, 3 album alla numero 1 in 6 anni, una BAFTA nomination per il lavoro sulla colonna sonora del film “A way of life†di Amma Assante, 2 premi Ivor Novellos, un Q award, 2 Brit nomination e 2 Grammy nomination.
“Draw the Line†(Polydor/Mercer Street Records) avvolge dolcemente con una positività immediata ed al tempo stesso con un’irresistibile nostalgia autunnale. Scompare l’introspezione degli album precedenti per lasciare spazio alla potenza di testi scritti d’istinto, carichi di verità e di una ferma volontà di cambiamento. Una trasformazione ritenuta necessaria da David nel momento in cui il successo conquistato sembrava limitarlo, relegandolo in una prigione creativa.
Sempre inconfondibilmente, con il nuovo album sembra però ritrovare una passione ed un trasporto che si erano affievoliti nel tempo. Il primo singolo “Fugitiveâ€, ispirato addirittura dal personaggio di Saddam Hussein, sembra testimoniare la presa di coscienza di colui che si nasconde, da sé stesso e dal mondo, per poi trovare la forza di affrontarli e di uscire dalla propria ‘nicchia’.
Molte sono le novità nel nuovo lavoro del cantautore, portate dal vento del cambiamento, tra cui la sfida di una nuova band che lo accompagna con Keith Pryor alla batteria, Robbie Malone al basso e Neill MacColl alla chitarra. A duettare con lui c’è inoltre la dolce voce blues di Jolie Holland nella traccia “Kathleen†e la voce energica diAnnie Lennox a dare una sferzata pop a “Full Steam Aheadâ€.
Curioso che le registrazioni siano avvenute nello studio nord londinese “The Church†appena acquistato da David Gray, proprio lo stesso che era ai tempi degli Eurythmics. Il pezzo “Stella the Artist†sembra si riferisca ad una musa ispiratrice, mentre “Transformation†incarna la volontà dell’album intero.
“Fame è una valutazione molto appropriata per come io mi sento†confessa l’artista. “Ho cose da dire come scrittore. Canzoni come “Nemesisâ€, “First Chance†e “Draw the Line†sono state davvero liberatorie, con immagini ed idee che fluivano e con un po’ di umorismo […] Mi sento molto vivo. Questo è il sentimento che è contenuto dentro “Draw The Lineâ€.’

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played the final ever concert at Giants Stadium, New Jersey last night (October 9) and sent the legendary venue off with a literal bang.
The show was played in a carnival atmosphere and was the last of five farewell gigs that the veteran rocker has played in the stadium during the past two weeks.
The venue first opened in 1976 but is set to be demolished and replaced with an adjacent stadium next year. Springsteen himself has played there well over 50 times (the first being back in 1985) and honoured its demise by opening each of the final shows a new song ‘Wrecking Ball’ – an upbeat anthem written especially for the occasion. He also paid a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the venue by referring to it as the “last bastion of affordable sports seating” from the stage.
While previous shows in the run featured complete performances of the 1975 classic ‘Born To Run’ and its 1978 follow-up ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’ last night featured the entirety of his biggest selling effort ‘Born In The USA’. The band tore through the legendary 1984 album, barely stopping for a moment but Springsteen did take the opportunity to re-enact his famous onstage sequence dancing sequence with a young Courtney Cox in the ‘Dancing In The Dark’ video, but this time with a balding fan waving a placard claiming ‘Bald Guys Are Great Dancers’.
Keeping in tradition with E Street Band shows over the past few years, The Boss took requests from the crowd too and even played an apt cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘The Last Time’. After well over three hours, he bought the main show to an end with a spirited version of ‘American Land’ as a chain of fireworks erupted around the stadium before winding down with a final salute to his home state in the shape of his often performed Tom Waits cover ‘Jersey Girl’.
