It would have been very easy for Editors to deliver The Back Room 3, but instead they’ve delivered something truly different and special.
The album is much more keyboard-led than previous efforts. There’s a mixture of new sounds and obvious influences include Depeche Mode, OMD, Kraftwerk & Joy Division.
The album includes ‘Papillon’, already an Editors live favourite; the track carries a great keyboard-riff.
‘The Big Exit’ reminds me of Dazzle Ships-era OMD with its pulsating drums and angular keyboard/guitar. It’s the nearest to ‘The End Has A Start’ that the album swings.
With ‘Eat Raw Meat’, there are more pulsating drums and a brilliant keyboard riff. It has a fabulous chorus, Tom Smith repeating the line “I give a little to you, I give a little to him, I give a little to her”.
‘Bricks And Mortar’ is one of the album’s stand-out tracks which commences with a drum machine and bass loop. I can guarantee the keyboard riff will be going round your head for months to come.
Overall, a fantastic album. Editors have truly delivered.
