Pumajaw – Favourites – (Fire Rec. 2009)
Indie,Folk,Psychedelic,Electronica,Lo-Fi,Experimental YAYY!! Following the release of last year’s ‘Curisoity Box’ album, on 18th May 2009, Pumajaw are to release a retrospective album, ‘Favourites’ on Fire. Singer extraordinaire Pinkie Maclure and multi-instrumentalist/producer John Willis released four albums on their own label before signing to Fire Records last year. This new compilation of fourteen of their favourite tracks gives a good overview of the duo’s distinctive mix of pop, electronica and psychedelia.

65daysofstatic – Escape From New York (Live) – (Monotreme, 2009)
A 45 minute rush of tinnitus, contrary techno, fragile guitars, anti-social drum’n’bass in 7/4 and, if you listen carefully, the sound of 20,000 people finding rooms in their heads they never knew were there. The DVD accompanying this release is ’65DOC’ a road movie, captured by 65 conspirator Caspar Newbolt, over the course of the North American leg of the tour.
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Vs. Children – (Tomlab, 2009)
Owen Ashworth’s fifth album strays from the strictly electronic instrumentation and trademark Casiotone keyboards of his earlier recordings. Instead, it’s built largely on the sounds of piano, organ, Mellotron, and acoustic percussion, both live and sampled. Guest appearances by Quever, Julie Lispector, and The Donkeys. Despite the guests and shift in instrumentation, “Vs. Children” feels just as warm and intimate as the first album. It also marks the continuing evolution of an idiosyncratic singer, songwriter, and producer.

Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas – II – (Eskimo, 2009)
Scandinavian disco kings Hans-Peter Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas are set to release the follow up to their widely acclaimed eponymous debut this year. The duo have had quite a journey since the release of their debut three years ago, with Thomas completing countless remixes and seeing his Full Pupp stable go from strength to strength, whilst Lindstrøm went on to release his solo cosmic disco opus, Where I Go You Go Too. Both of them have been busy in the studio together during their time back in Oslo, and the fruits of their labour are now finally ready for release. Whilst Lindstrøm has always been one for using live instrumentation in the studio, Thomas’ gradual shift into using more and more live elements in his solo work has meant that their second collaborative album, entitled II, has a much looser, organic feel than the first record. The original intent stands, however, as they merge their italo, Krautrock and disco influences into a lush singular whole, imbuing them with their characteristically warm production sheen. Released just in time for summer, it looks as if the Nordic duo are looking to compete for part of your personal sunshine soundtrack this year. – residentadvisor –
Hildur Guðnadóttir – Without Sinking – (Touch, 2009)
FACT (UK):
Without Sinking is listed as one of the Best Albums of the Year So Far
Tremulous, deeply romantic cello work from this respected Icelandic artist, bolstered by bass and barely perceptible electronic processing from Johann Johannsson and Skuli Sverrisson. Not since Arthur Russell’s World of Echo has a “traditional†string instrument sounded so urgent or expressive; not since Music For 18 Musicians has the FACT office bopped so happily to something which might be described as – gulp – “classical†music.

El Perro Del Mar – Love Is Not Pop EP – (Licking Fingers, 2009)
A savvy artist knows when to change things up, when to lay in the cut, and when to get some new publicity photos. We weren’t the only ones lukewarm on the last El Perro Del Mar album, so we’re happy that Ms. Perro Del Mar, Sarah Assbring, is taking a chance with her waif-is-me shtick. Her new seven-song mini-album, titled Love Is Not Pop and recorded with one half of Balearic funk duo Studio, Rasmus Hägg, is a welcomed mini-curve ball. The set will come out in Sweden on April 1 via Licking Fingers (U.S. release date coming soon) and the new song “Change of Heart” is currently streaming at the EPDM MySpace. She’s got a few bleached-out new publicity shots, too. In a confessional post on her website, Assbring goes into detail about the making of Love Is Not Pop, and reveals details behind two more tracks on the record: a cover of Lou Reed’s “Heavenly Arms” from 1982’s The Blue Mask and “It Is Something (To Have Wept)”, inspired by River Phoenix, sometime Calvin Klein photog Bruce Weber and poet G.K. Chesterton. She also mentions Hägg is working on a solo album featuring all sorts of live instrumentation and refers to her work with the producer as “magical.” Well, shucks. EPDM will take part in a couple Morrissey tribute nights in Sweden at the end of this month, and she has a few local gigs lined up for March and April. – Pitchfork –

Emma Tricca – Minor White – (Bird, 2009)
Â
Italian-English singer-songwriter Emma Tricca came to the attention of Finders Keepers and Twisted Nerve boss Andy Votel in the summer of 2006 whilst she was playing at the Green Man festival. Since then she’s participated in Jarvis Cocker’s Meltdown festival in 2007 and toured with folk icon John Renbourn. Minor White is the culmination of all her work to date, a debut album that sounds utterly uncontrived and effortlessly accomplished as a first collection of songs. The arrangements tend to be very simple and stark, chiefly consisting of Tricca’s seductive, whispery vocal and brightly fingerpicked acoustic guitars with only a light smattering of additional instrumentation running through the album, illuminating pieces like ‘Paris Rain’ with violin and chiming dulcimer-type sounds. Lovely.
