On Nov. 11, Bob Dylan fans will finally get to hear the long-awaited collaboration project that will bring some of the songwriter’s handwritten lyrics from 1967 to life.
Lost on The River: The New Basement Tapes is a team effort between legendary producer T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Rhiannon Giddens of Carolina Chocolate Drops, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes and Marcus Mumford of Mumford & Sons. The crew met up at Capitol Studios in March for two weeks to finish some songs that were written by Dylan during the same period that spawned the original Basement Tapes.
“What transpired during those two weeks was amazing for all of us,” Burnett said in a press release. “There was a deep well of generosity and support in the studio at all times, which reflected the tremendous trust and generosity shown by Bob in SHARING these lyrics with us in the first place.” A documentary highlighting the making of the album will premiere on Showtime on Nov. 21.
Fans who pre-order the album starting today on iTunes or Amazon MP3 will receive an instant download of “Nothing to It.” The album will come as a 15-song standard edition or a 20-song deluxe edition. Four other instant downloads will also be available in the coming weeks with digital pre-orders. Direct-to-fan box sets and bundles can be found on the album’s website.
A video for “Nothing to It” (see above) also premiered today, and it features Dylan’s actual handwriting throughout the clip. If the song is any indication of how good the entire album is, then we’re all in for quite a treat.
