The nominees for the 2011 BRIT Awards have been announced, with Tinie Tempah picking up four nominations, including for best Breakthrough Act, Best Single, Best Male Solo Artist and the big one – Best British Album of The Year.
Plan B, Mumford and Sons and The xx also received three nominations each, with The xx up for best British group, Best Album and Breakthrough Act. Were the album nomination to be successful they would be the first act ever to win both the Mercury and the BRIT’s main prizes.
Their good showing in the nominations could possibly be attributed toa change the in voting this year which sees artists vote for the nominees alongside the regular panel of experts, critics and music industry types – a move BRITs chairman David Joseph recently told the Guardian he thought would affect the awards, saying “It will have a more left-of-centre influence”.
Cheryl Cole battles it out with Laura Marling, Ellie Goulding, Rumer and Paloma Faith for Best Britsh Female Solo Artist whilst the Male category see Mark Ronson, Plan B and Tinie Tempah in contention with Paul Weller and Robert Plant .
In the international arena we also see unlikely bedfellows, Justin Beiber, the Glee Cast, Bruno Mars and Temper Trap battle it out with The National for International Breakthrough Act.
The 2011 BRIT Awards take place on Tuesday February 15 at 8pm and will be broadcast live on ITV 1.
