Lez Zeppelin performing at the Gramercy Theater in February
Lez Zeppelin, the all female tribute to the most groundbreaking hard rock band of all time, will be headlining a benefit for low-income students next Thursday night at the Canal Room in downtown Manhattan.
Even in this city filled with tributes to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and others, Lez Zeppelin has always stood out due to their feminine take on Robert Plant’s intense lyrics and vocal style, while flawlessly recreating the raw energy of the band’s crushing guitars, bass, and drums in a live environment. The group has even recorded a studio album of Led Zeppelin I, which Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry praised saying “I have never heard it done better. Their attention to sounds in the studio, energy, and playing has put them as one of the first to capture the overall vibe of the original. But they also subtly put their stamp on it as well, following the tradition of other classic artists. This album is great to listen to. They don’t miss a beat. Can’t wait to see ‘em live!â€
Those interested in following Perry’s advice at Thursday’s benefit will also be treated to a unique show in that the group will be performing acoustically, with hints of a few special surprises as well. When Lez Zep last played the Gramercy in February (read my review here), they played the entire Led Zeppelin I record live, so with a group of this caliber, anything is possible. Support at the benefit show will come from The Hell or High Water band, and a special performance by Bleeker3 with Ryan Moriarty, Kevin Moriarty and Chris Guida.
While tickets start at $80, the money will be going to fund programs for low-income high school students learning office, computer, and other skills to fully prepare them for careers in the corporate workforce. Furthermore, not only is a portion of the ticket tax deductible, but the event will have a three hour open bar, making the bang well worth the buck.
Lez Zeppelin plays New York City several times a year, but this show promises to be unique in a number of ways, not the least of which is using the power of rock and roll to support a good cause.
