Go, the solo debut from Sigur Rós vocalist Jónsi Birgisson will be released by XL on March 23. Yesterday, Birgisson stopped by “Soundcheck”, a show on the New York public radio station WNYC, to play a few songs live. The show is online now; you can click here to hear it.
On piano and three-stringed ukulele, Jónsi played acoustic versions of premiere track “Boy Lilikoi”, album opener “Go Do”, and “Around Us”. We also got a quick snippet of the studio version of another track, “Animal Arithmetic”. And seriously, it’s pretty incredible that he’s able to conjure that otherworldly falsetto whenever he wants it.
The show’s also worth hearing because we learn some interesting things about Jónsi– like the exact correct pronunciation of his name (Yun-see Beer-gus-son) and the fact that the helium wail of Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson was a formative influence, which totally makes sense.
Jónsi plans to tour this spring; the only date announced so far is a Coachella slot on April 18. From the looks of things, it’s going to be incredible.
