The Roots’ new album, …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin, is out next week via Def Jam. The album can be streamed via Pitchfork Advance until May 18.
…And Then You Shoot Your Cousin takes its title from a lyric in KRS-One’s “Step Into a World (Rapture’s Delight)” (“MCs more worried about their financial backin’/Steady packin’ a gat as if something’s gonna happen/But it doesn’t, they wind up shootin’ they cousin, they bugging.”) It was produced by ?uestlove, Black Thought, and Richard Nichols, with help from Mike Jerz, Trapzillas, The Wurxs, D.D. Jackson, Joseph Simmons, Damion Ward, and Ray Angry. Contributors include Greg Porn, Dice Raw, Raheem DeVaughn, Mercedes Martinez from the Jazzyfatnastees, Patty Crash, Mary Lou Williams, and the Metropolis Ensemble.
Tonight and tomorrow night, the Roots will hold their album release shows at the Public Theater in New York. On May 20, the Roots will be the musical guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”, where they are also the regular house band. That same night, the band will participate in a CRWN interview with Elliott Wilson.
?uestlove is also currently writing a six-part series for New York magazine called “How Hip-Hop Failed Black America”. Read it here.
