Lorde, St Vincent, Joan Jett and Kim Gordon, formerly of Sonic Youth, joined the remaining members of Nirvana for a one-off performance to mark the band’s induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last night (April 10).
Each singer stepped into Kurt Cobain’s place for one track from the band’s back catalogue, with Joan Jett singing ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Kim Gordon performing ‘Aneurysm’, St Vincent playing ‘Lithium’ and Lorde singing ‘All Apologies’.
They joined drummer Dave Grohl, bassist Krist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear for the gig which followed the band’s induction into the Hall Of Fame by REM’s Michael Stipe.
As well as Nirvana, Kiss, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt were also enrolled into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The E Street Band received the Award for Musical Excellence and Beatles manager Brian Epstein and original Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham earned the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers.
Joan Jett had previously been rumoured to join the band after a photograph of her distinctive Gibson Melody Maker guitar alongside Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear’s instruments, was posted on the Foo Fighters Instagram account. The identity of the other guests was kept secret until the show.
