………….GRAND RAPIDS – It didn’t take long for Bob Seger’s fans in West Michigan to show their enthusiasm for the return of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer for an April 2 concert at Van Andel Arena.
Eight minutes.
Tickets for the Van Andel Arena show were snapped up by fans of all ages standing outside in sub-freezing temperatures Saturday morning for the chance to see the 65-year-old rocker on his latest tour with the Silver Bullet Band.
Danny Hurst and Dixie Arnold camped out for almost 48 hours to be first in line.
The Grand Rapids couple snagged seats right up in front of the stage for Seger’s first performance here since he launched his celebrated comeback tour at Van Andel Arena in November 2006.
“Yeah, I was here for two nights,†the 60-year-old Hurst said. “It’s been cold.â€
Arnold, 56, didn’t mind, as long as she gets to see her favorite singer one more time.
“We’ve been Seger fans forever and ever. I’ve seen him a hundred times, but I had to see him again,†she said.
Cheryl Harrington, 54, of Muskegon pumped her first after getting her tickets.
“I said, ‘Lord, let him come back.’ I heard two weeks ago he was coming back,†she said. “I don’t come and stand in this weather for anyone. My dad’s name was Bob and he died young at age 41 of leukemia. I named my son in honor of my dad and Bob Seger. I just totally love him and his music.
“If he comes back again, I’ll be here again.â€
Live Nation promoter Ron Clause said the official sellout occurred at 10:08 a.m.
“Seger always has been a Grand Rapids favorite. He doesn’t come around very often, so it’s a great opportunity to see him,†he said.
A few hundred fans who stood outside Van Andel Arena all were able to get their orders processed in the first half hour for the Grand Rapids show. The tour is set to kick off March 26 at the Huntington Center in Toledo.
So far, the tour includes performances in Toledo (March 26 and 31) Saginaw (March 29), Cincinnati (April 5), Cleveland (April 7) and Buffalo, N.Y. (April 9). The March 31 concert in Toldeo sold out in a record 6 minutes Friday morning, prompting promoters to add a second show there. Tickets for the Saginaw show also sold out quickly.
Clause said no determination has been made if a second Grand Rapids show would be added. The singer’s website indicates that additional concert dates should be announced soon as the tour keeps expanding.
“Bob Seger is a Michigan guy; he always sells well here,†Van Andel Arena marketing director Lynne Ike said. “We’re glad he decided to come back to West Michigan again.â€
So are Jay Cramer, 35, and Nicole Stevens, 31, of Grand Rapids.
They were second in line at the Ticketmaster outlet at the Family Fare supermarket on Fulton Street and snagged a pair of floor seats for the Seger show. They hustled over to Van Andel Arena after the computer at the supermarket indicated a sellout and still were able to get two lower-bowl tickets for family members.
“He’s not going to tour many more times after this,†Cramer said.
“He’s classic. Our parents got us hooked on Seger,†Stevens added. “We couldn’t get tickets the last time he came here. We had to get them this time. We just got lucky.â€
