Weezer’s gig at the Santa Barbara, California club Yucatan on June 16th, 2000 remains one of the most legendary shows in the band’s long history. The group hadn’t played a proper concert in three years, and the lucky few who crammed themselves into the tiny club saw the group tear through seven songs from 1994’s The Blue Album along with two Pinkerton tracks and first-ever “Hash Pipe.” They also debuted “My Brain Is Working Overtime,” a song Rivers Cuomo demoed the previous year.
It was the beginning of a remarkable comeback that would soon bring the band back into arenas, the pop charts and even MTV just four years after Pinkerton failed to make any kind of commercial impact and the group seemed headed towards oblivion. Here’s a rather shaky video of “My Brain Is Working Overtime” from the big comeback gig.
Sadly, this wasn’t a complete reunion of Weezer. Bassist Matt Sharp had left the band a couple of years earlier to focus on the Rentals. He was replaced by Mikey Welsh, who would leave himself a little over a year later after suffering a breakdown. He passed away on October 8th, 2011. Less than three months earlier, he reunited onstage with Weezer at Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York.
