The Stone Roses made their triumphant return to Glasgow Green last night (June 15).
The classic four-piece played their last ever show together, before reuniting last year, in the park on June 9, 1990. Frontman Ian Brown acknowledged the momentous occasion by saying, “this is a bit déjà vu”.
Walking on stage to a lone piper playing ‘Scotland The Brave’, the band opened their 17-song set with ‘I Wanna Be Adored’ – you can watch fan-shot footage of the band performing the track below. They followed it up with ‘Elephant Stone’, a track the band have only recently reintroduced to their set, having previously not played it since 1990.
They then played ‘Ten Storey Love Song’ and ‘Sally Cinnamon’ as the crowd began to chant, “here we, here we, here we fucking go!” The show was almost identical to the set they played at Finsbury Park in London last weekend (June 7, 8), however, they did omit ‘Going Down’.
Typically, Ian Brown was a man of few words throughout the set, saying the odd “nice one” and “thanks” in-between fan favourite anthems such as ‘Fools Gold’, ‘Waterfall’ and the brilliant ‘Made Of Stone’. He dedicated ‘She Bangs The Drums’ to “the ladies, as always”.
“Are you in the mood for a sing-a-long,” asked Brown before ‘Elizabeth My Dear’. “Fuck the polis [police],” he added after. The band finished their awesome set with an extended version of ‘I Am The Resurrection’, as enthusiastic fans let off red and green flares.
“Best band in the world in the second best city in the world,” said Mani as the band took a final bow. “I wish I was Glaswegian,” added Ian Brown as the band soaked in the applause while walking off-stage.
Earlier in the day, The View, Jake Bugg and Primal Scream, who the previous night played a secret gig to around 200 people at Glasgow’s Poetry Club, entertained the large crowd. Primal Scream played a set heavy on material from their new album, ‘More Light’, but also played their classic anthems ‘Movin’ On Up’, ‘Loaded’ and ‘Rocks’.
