Daft Punk’s new album, Random Access Memories, will arrive on May 21st, and the electronic French duo are highlighting their collaborators in a new video series with Vice’s Creators Project and Intel. The first to be featured is Italian producer Giorgio Moroder, the disco legend who helped engineer some of Donna Summer’s biggest hits. In this clip, Moroder touches on the massive amount of dance music that’s being released today and discusses how Daft Punk sought to distinguish themselves with deeper instrumentation.

“Daft Punk wanted to do something and do it in a way that’s not done by just pushing a note or a chord,” says Moroder. “You definitely hear that it’s nice and full; the drums and the bass have that warm, that full sound. . . This is like a step forward.”
Moroder also goes into his musical history with a story of how he “met the synthesizer” and with tales of working with Summer, the joys of dance music, first hearing Daft Punk’s “One More Time” and more. “What the world needs now is not only good dance songs, which I think are out,” he says. “The world needs something new.”
