If you pick the music for car commercials, your job is about to get a whole lot easier: Moby has a new album coming out. On June 30, Mute will release Wait for Me, the new album from everyone’s favorite bald vegan ex-punk techno producer.Â
For a Moby album, Wait for Me should be a relatively low-tech affair. He recorded it in his home studio, with non-famous friends providing the vocals. He also drew the album cover in black sharpie on copy paper, which is a far cry from this. Moby describes the album as “a quieter, more melodic, more mournful, and more personal record than some of the records I’ve made in the past.”Â
He did, however, call in a favor from one famous friend. David Lynch (yes, the David Lynch) directed the animated video for first single “Shot in the Back of the Head”,which you can watch over at Pitchfork.tv. Good luck topping that one, car commercial directors!Â
Ever since the entire universe fell in love with Play back in 1999, it’s been too easy to make fun of Moby. But this guy made “Go” and “Next Is the E” and Everything Is Wrong, and he put on a hell of a live show back when hardly anybody in electronic music was attempting anything like that. Also, anyone who’s rewatched The Bourne Identity lately can agree that “Extreme Ways” sounds pretty badass over the end credits. So Wait for Me could end up being good. At the very least, it’ll probably be better than the new Eminem album. Belated victory!
Moby’s written a statement about the new album, which you can read here.Â
