Vinyl has had a major resurgence over the last decade, and it’s new just contemporary acts who are benefiting. In fact, the year’s two best-selling LPs from the rock genre were first released over four decades ago.
50,000 people purchased Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon on vinyl in 2015, ranking the fourth most of any LP over the calendar year. The Beatles’ Abbey Road followed close behind with 49,800 copies sold.
With 48,000 copies sold, the best-selling contemporary rock record on vinyl, Arctic Monkeys’ AM, wasn’t even released in 2015. Of those albums that did surface last year, Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell and Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color sold the most, moving 44,900 and 44,600 copies, respectively.
Not surprisingly, Adele’s 25 sold more than any other vinyl in 2015 moving 116,000 copies. Taylor Swift’s 1989 was second with 74,000 copies sold.
Overall, sales of vinyl were up 30% from 2014 and accounted for nearly 9% of total physical album sales.
