Florence And The Machine delivered an energetic headline set at Glastonbury 2015 tonight (June 26) that saw lead singer Florence Welch thank Foo Fighters’s Dave Grohl for his support before closing the show by stripping off her shirt and running from the stage.
The band stepped up to the headline slot after Grohl broke his leg in Gothenburg earlier this month and the band performed Foo Fighters track ‘Times Like These’ in tribute to the singer-guitarist.
“Dave if you’re listening, we love you. We all love you,” Welch declared.
Bathed in the bright light of the Pyramid Stage, Flo kick-started the set at 10.15pm with ‘What The Water Gave Me’ and ‘Ship To Wreck’. “We would really have liked to have a choir but we didn’t have the time,” she said between tracks, acknowledging her late promotion to headline act. “So we were wondering Glastonbury if you’d be our choir?”
The singer further encouraged the raucous audience by encouraging them to leap up and down on ‘Shake It Up’ and demanding to see ‘as many people on shoulders as possible’ on ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)’. The latter saw Florence run right down to the crowd, where she took a daisy headband from a fan and serenaded a female member of the crowd.
Following the Foos cover, the pounding percussion of ‘Drumming Song’ rattled through Glastonbury, though the biggest sing-along came at the end with ‘Lungs’ singles ‘You’ve Got The Love’ and ‘Dog Days Are Over’.
Closing the show, Welch asked every audience member to kiss and hug the person next to them, before requesting every person present strip off one item of clothing and swing it over their head.
Rather than simply encourage, Florence showed the crowd how it’s done, removing her shirt and spinning it over her head before darting off stage.
