Foo Fighters and Muse were among the bands paying tribute to Kurt Cobain this weekend (April 5) on what would have been the 20th anniversary of the Nirvana frontman’s death.
Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl’s band Foo Fighters led the tributes with a post on the band’s official social media pages linking to an image of Cobain and a stream of The Beatles’ ‘In My Life’, a song beloved by the late singer and one which was played at his funeral. Guitarist Pat Smear, who plays with Grohl in Foo Fighters, also played in Nirvana.
Meanwhile, Muse covered the Nirvana song ‘Lithium’ during their gig at Lollapalooza in Brazil. “Someone great died 20 years ago, this next song is for Kurt Cobain,” Muse frontman Matt Bellamy said during the Sao Paulo show before launching into the ‘Nevermind’ song.
Around the same time on Saturday night St Vincent performed the same cover version in Chicago. Scroll down to see both Muse and Annie Clark’s band perform their Kurt Cobain tribute cover versions below.
A recent re-investigation into the suicide of the Nirvana singer 20 years ago did not discover any new evidence that changed the original findings.
Kurt Cobain was aged 27 when he was found dead of a shotgun wound in his home on Lake Washington Boulevard on April 8, 1994. He was found by an electrician who had come to do some work on the house. The police investigation determined that Cobain had committed suicide three days before, on April 5.
