Prior to beginning work on their forthcoming seventh studio album, Tears For Fears hatched a plan to record and release two covers as a means of “kick-starting the recording process again,” according to singer Roland Orzabal. Already we’ve heard their shockingly good rendition of Arcade Fire’s “Ready to Start”, and today the pair have unveiled their take on Hot Chip’s 2006 single “And I Was A Boy From School”.
The original’s remarkable for being funky in an almost quirky, nerdy way, thanks to the glitchy synth loop and hushed vocals. With their version, Tears for Fears infuse the synths with a little more steam and add some theatricality to the vocals, delivering something that sounds rather canonical in their discography. Tears For Fears’ 30th anniversary box set of their debut LP, The Hurting, is out now via Universal. The band’s new album, the follow-up to 2004?s reunion record Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, is due out sometime next year.
